Character Name: Riley Aemilia James
Age: 19
Suit/Rank: Four of Hearts
History:
Riley James is a second-generation Deckborn, with her wealthy grandparents being the first to originally come to the Deck and settle in the Hearts. She has quite a lot of family members still on the outside, but she herself was raised almost wholly on Deck. Her father, Lucien James, was the one to marry into the James family, taking his wife's surname. Her mother, Rita, was the second oldest child in her generation - her brother, Maximillian, was the oldest. As a result, he was heir to the James Family fortune and name, and he would be head of the family after his father died.
However, this didn't settle well with Lucien. He wanted the family name - not for himself, but for Riley's sake. In his opinion, the unmarried, playful Max did not deserve the responsibility that came with the family name, especially since he had no one to pass the fortune onto. And so, Riley's father began to plot. He set up a trip to Venice for the four of them: him, his wife, Max, and Riley. Once off-Deck, it was just a simple matter of poisoning Max's food - just enough to incapacitate him so that he would be unable to assume his role as Head of the Family.
No one knows what happened that night. Perhaps Lucien's hand slipped. Perhaps the preparation of the food caused the poison to overreact. Whatever did happen, Lucien certainly wasn't planning for five-year-old Riley to forget something in the dining room. To double-back and find Max dead in the hallway. She never forgot the image of her uncle; and developed a crippling fear of blood to go along with.
Lucien was overwhelmed with guilt. He hadn't planned for this - he didn't want this - he couldn't excuse himself for this. A couple years later, he convinced Rita James that he wasn't a fit father for her child, and they divorced. While the parting was indeed amicable, he never confessed what he had done to Rita or to Riley.
Riley grew up as a fearful young girl, only finding solace in the sports she was taught in school. Her mother noticed this, and helped her grow out of her timidity by gently pushing her towards basketball when she was nine. Riley, already tall for her age, caught on quickly, and grew to love the sport. As she found her passion, she grew more assured of herself, though her hemophobia stayed with her, along with an extremely delicate constitution.
From then on, Riley became a stronger person in general. She still idolized and missed her uncle, but chose to channel her grief into a constructive force - her skill at athletics. Though she went through school with passing grades, she was continually at the top of her class in sports, and went on to become the sports teacher for the younger Deck kids, from ages five to eight. Her passion for her job is obvious, and she doesn't look for much more in life, though she knows in the back of her mind that someday, she might end up being the heiress to the James Family Name. However, currently, Rita is in that position, and all is well.
Riley occasionally sees Lucien nowadays, as he did not leave the Deck after the divorce. He remarried when Riley was fifteen, and they have a friendly relationship, but she still doesn’t know that her father was responsible for the death of her beloved uncle.
Personality: Riley is a spontaneous girl. She tends to rush headlong into things and relies on her instinct rather than logic to help her out in most situations. Whatever she does decide to do, she puts her whole heart into it, and doesn't do things by halves. She has a tendency to say exactly what she thinks, and her blunt nature can get her into trouble. She can never sit still, and she's almost always on the move. She believes a lot in her own strength, and is a very self-assured. She's fun-loving, a hard worker, and incredibly determined and set in her ways. While Riley isn't necessarily polite to people, she tends to be comfortable with them. She doesn't have much of a temper, and unlike the stereotype for most girls, she hardly ever holds grudges.
She enjoys being rebellious, or doing things that people wouldn't necessarily expect or find acceptable. However, she's still a positive influence on the children that she works with. Though she can be a bit too harsh at times, she makes up for it with her undying passion for sports. Her enthusiasm for what she teaches obvious, and she cares a lot for her students. Though she'd never admit it, she worries over what her students think of her, and tries her best to be more of a friend than a distant teacher. While she doesn't care much about having friends in her own age group, she finds it very important to be an inspiration to younger kids, whether they're passionate about what she teaches or not. She has a very good relationship with her mother and they're more like friends than mother and daughter.
Appearance: Riley is incredibly tall for her age, at 5'10, and has always been so, which explains why her mother first pushed her towards basketball. Her hair is naturally brown, but she dyes it black, and keeps it cut very short (around chin-length). Her eyes are a bright blue, and her skin is tanned thanks to hours of playing out in the sun. She tends to wear bright, bold colors, and oranges, greens, and purples are her favorites. She has a permanent easy grin on her face, and she tends to wear things that easy to move around in. She wears some jewelry and make-up, but most of the time, you'll find her with sports watches and duffel bags.

Why this Suit? Riley has never had an urge to switch suits. As a girl, she's always adored her family, and has good relationships with her mother and her grandparents. As such, she adores her Suit as well, and considers it to be her home. Additionally, her kindness and passion while teaching matches the other members of her suit, and she does fit in, even with her sometimes brash nature.
